Most of us use hope and optimism interchangeably.
But they’re not the same thing.
So, what’s the difference?
Well, let’s take a look at some popular emojis to explain the difference. (This is The Upside, after all).
Hope is the glowing star. It reflects our emotional desire for positive outcomes. And it's symbolically connected to wishing.
In other words, hope is when you are uncertain about what will happen, feel like you have little control, but still wish for a positive outcome.
On the flip side, optimism is the rocket ship. It represents forward motion with a clear destination in mind.
Optimism is when you confidently believe in positive outcomes. And it’s this sense of control and purpose that can propel us through challenges.
So, next time you drop some emojis in the chat, reach for the glowing star and rocket.
You might just spread a little hope and optimism.
And that’s never a bad thing.
