Applied online, it tells us how language is adapted, repurposed, and imbued with specific meanings.
So, why is semiotics making Gen Z feel old?
Well, because a new language of hashtags, memes, and viral trends has been appearing on social media — written by Gen Alpha.
Defined by memes like Skibidi Toilet and terms like "Fanum tax", the emerging vocabulary is confusing most internet users.
But, for many Gen Zers, this semiotic shift is the first time they’re struggling to decode internet culture.
And that’s not always an easy reality to confront.
Just ask millennials.
